Tyler Ronan is the first ever transgender protagonist in a AAA game, and this game also delves into new topics for Dontnod such as grief, panic attacks, and the importance of therapy.
On the other hand, the subject in this game is completely new territory and it's a great beginning, though there's still much work needing to be done. The video game industry has made some progress in representation, largely because of this studio and the success of titles like Life Is Strange, which tackled subjects like mental healthcare and racism.
Even when their representation isn't always the absolute best or the most sensible, they never give up or cave in to the pundits.
Reviewed on: Xbox One, PC Dontnod Entertainment has my earnest respect for being one of the few game studios daring to explore taboo topics in video games.
